Texas treats golf carts and Low-Speed Vehicles as two separate categories. The TxDMV does not title or register golf carts, but golf carts are eligible for a special Golf Cart license plate obtained from your county tax assessor-collector's office using an Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U). With a golf cart plate, a cart may generally be operated in a qualifying master-planned community, on a public or private beach open to vehicular traffic, and — for daytime trips to and from a golf course — on roads posted 35 mph or less within about two miles of where it's usually parked, plus crossing intersections. Cities can also pass ordinances allowing golf carts on certain local roads posted 35 mph or less.
A Low-Speed Vehicle is different: a four-wheeled vehicle with a top speed of about 20–25 mph that meets the federal Low-Speed Vehicle safety standard, carries a manufacturer-assigned 17-digit VIN, and goes through the full TxDMV title and registration process like a standard vehicle. LSVs get regular Texas plates, must carry liability insurance at state minimums, and are limited to roads with lower posted speed limits. A driver's license is required to operate a golf cart or LSV on a public road.
Local rules can vary and change over time, so always confirm the current requirements with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and your local government before driving on public roads. This page is general information, not legal advice.
For a golf cart, you apply for a Golf Cart license plate at your county tax assessor-collector's office using Form 130-U; in a qualifying master-planned community the plate requirement may be waived, though other rules still apply. If operated at 25 mph or less, a golf cart is required to display a slow-moving vehicle emblem. For a street-legal LSV, you take evidence of ownership (such as the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin or existing title) and a completed Form 130-U to the county tax office to title and register the vehicle, which then receives standard Texas plates and must carry insurance. Required LSV equipment reflects the federal standard, including headlamps, stop lamps, turn signals, tail lamps, reflectors, mirrors, a windshield, seat belts at every seating position, a parking brake, and a 17-digit VIN.
Because that VIN and federal certification are assigned at the factory, a standard golf cart can't be retrofitted into a registerable LSV — you need a vehicle built and certified as an LSV. Many of our street-legal models ship LSV-ready; call and we'll confirm which carts are set up to qualify for Texas registration or a golf cart plate.
Texas is full of golf-cart-friendly settings: master-planned communities, coastal and beach towns, lake areas, and retirement neighborhoods, plus heavy utility use on ranches, farms, and large properties. Because plate requirements and on-road rules can differ between master-planned communities, beaches, and cities with their own ordinances, it's always smart to confirm the specific rules with your community or city.
Whether you want a two-seater for the neighborhood, a rugged lifted utility cart for the ranch, or a six-passenger LSV for the whole family, we can help you match a cart to how and where you'll drive it in Texas.
We carry the brands buyers ask for: Club Car, EZGO, Yamaha, Denago, Evolution, and more — new and used, electric and gas, from two to six passengers, in standard, lifted utility, and street-legal LSV configurations.

Golf carts aren't titled or registered by the TxDMV, but they can get a special Golf Cart license plate and be operated in qualifying master-planned communities, on certain beaches, and on roads posted 35 mph or less under specific conditions — including daytime golf-course trips and cities that allow them by ordinance. A driver's license is required. A true street-legal LSV is registered separately like a car. Always confirm current rules with the TxDMV and your local government.
